Low metabolic rates in primitive hunters and weaver spiders

چکیده
The rates of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide release of primitive hunters and weaver spiders, the Chilean Recluse spider Loxosceles laeta Nicolet (Araneae: Sicariidae) and the Chilean Tiger spider Scytodes globula Nicolet (Araneae: Scytodidae), are analyzed, and their relationship with body mass is studied. The results are compared with the metabolic data available for other spiders. A lowmetabolic rate is found both for these two species and other primitive hunters and weavers, such as spiders of the families Dysderidae and Plectreuridae. The metabolic rate of this group is lower than in nonprimitive spiders, such as the orb weavers (Araneae: Araneidae). The results reject the proposition of a general relationship for metabolic rate for all land arthropods (related to body mass) and agree with the hypothesis that metabolic rates are affected not only by sex, reproductive and developmental status, but also by ecology and life style, recognizing here, at least in the araneomorph spiders, a group having low metabolism, comprising the primitive hunters and weaver spiders, and another group comprising the higher metabolic rate web building spiders (e.g. orb weavers).

Sexual Differences in Metabolic Rates of Spiders
In general, spiders are considered to exhibit resting metabolic rates about half of those measured for other poikilothermic animals of equal mass (e .g ., Anderson 1970; Greenstone & Bennett 1980; Anderson & Prestwich 1982 ; Anderson 1987; Paul et al. 1989; Anderson 1996). However, these metabolic rates were all compared to Hemmingsen's poikilotherm mass-scaling equation (1960), which has recen...
متن کاملMetabolic Rates of Resting Salticid an D Thomisid Spider S
Rates of metabolism of jumping and crab spiders were evaluated to determine if life-styl e characteristics are associated with rates of energy expenditure in these `sit-and-wait' predators . Resting rates of oxygen consumption were measured under standardized conditions in nine species of salticid and three species of thomisid spiders . These rates and those previously reported ranged from 50–7...
متن کاملA Meta-Analysis of Predation Risk Effects on Pollinator Behaviour
Flower-visiting animals are constantly under predation risk when foraging and hence might be expected to evolve behavioural adaptations to avoid predators. We reviewed the available published and unpublished data to assess the overall effects of predators on pollinator behaviour and to examine sources of variation in these effects. The results of our meta-analysis showed that predation risk sig...
متن کامل[Diversity of insects captured by weaver spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) in the cocoa agroecosystem in Tabasco, Mexico].
The aim of this work was to know the diversity of insects captured by weaver spiders in a plantation of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) of 6 ha in the State of Tabasco, Mexico. The study was carried out from July 2004 to June 2005 by means biweekly samples of the insects captured on the spiders webs. The total of 3,041 webs of 54 species of spiders belonging to seven families (Araneidae, Theridiidae...
متن کاملArtificial night light alters nocturnal prey interception outcomes for morphologically variable spiders
Artificial night light has the potential to significantly alter visually-dependent species interactions. However, examples of disruptions of species interactions through changes in light remain rare and how artificial night light may alter predator-prey relationships are particularly understudied. In this study, we examined whether artificial night light could impact prey attraction and interce...
